Joh Jos Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 2010 is a single-vineyard late-harvest Riesling from the Mosel Valley. The banner 2010 vintage saw an exceptionally cool summer followed by a late harvest, resulting in extreme ripeness and piercing acidity. This Goldkapsel is remarkably concentrated, offering an explosive palate of lime zest, pineapple and crushed rocks. The structural intensity of the 2010 vintage provides a laser-like focus that carries the sweetness with ease. This bottling is still in its youth, with its massive acidity promising a lifespan of half a century or more.

Golden yellow. Rich, smoky aromas of dried apricot, baked apple and white raisins. Sumptuous papaya fruit texture with the weight of honey-glazed botrytis is elevated by an ethereal minerality. A Prum auction cuvee – 2010 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese gold capsule A.P. #28 – reflects a further degree of botrytis concentration vis-a-vis the corresponding non-auction Auslese. This adds an overtly honeyed cast both aromatically and on its dense, oily palate as well as an accentuated sense of caramelization, both of which – taken together with what I must presume is even greater extract – have considerable buffering effect on the high acid energy that courses through either of these Wehlener gold capsule Auslesen. Toasted praline rather than the more piquant nuttiness of its near non-auction sibling serve for counterpoint in this gold capsule Auslese, to which candied orange rind, truffle, and musk add further intrigue. Here is another of those Prum 2010s you’ll have trouble banishing from your palate much less your memory once you’ve swallowed. I would bank on this thriving for half a century, but would advise keeping hands off the corkscrew for the next 12-15 years if one wishes to maximize in gustatory terms one’s investment. - David Schildknecht

Dances out of the glass on the nose. Such delicacy and life! Racy. Masses of acid and so much potential. Glorious vitality. No excess sulphur – Katharina Prüm really seems to be reducing the apparent sulphur in these young wines. (JR)Jancis Robinson11th March 2013
