Jean Louis Chave is undoubtedly one of the greatest producers of Hermitage Rouge. As one of the largest landowners in the Hermitage appellation Chave has vines spread across 9 of the finest lieux-dits, with the Rouge being made from 100% Syrah sourced from vines ranging between 50 and 85+ years of age. From the oft-overlooked 2001 vintage, this is a fragrant and refined release absolutely perfect for drinking now. Abundant with deep dark fruits, pretty floral highlights and superb mineral tension, it is a charming release that perfectly encapsulates the enduring quality of this estate and its inimitable winemaker.

The 2001 L'Hermitage has aged gracefully. Vivid iodine, black olive tapenade, dried violet, forest floor, cured meat and wet tea bag all race out of the glass. Medium-bodied and distinctively refreshing, the palate gradually brings out more flavors, revealing dried red and black fruits, game, black pepper and a finely tuned herbal edge. Coming in around 13% alcohol, the 2001 is drinking beautifully now, yet it has plenty of structure and substance to tackle at least five more years.Nicolas Greinacher28th March 2024
