The Chave family has reportedly been producing wines in the Rhône Valley since 1481 and Jean Louis Chave is unquestionably one of the most famous producers of both Hermitage Rouge and Blanc. They are one of the largest landowners in the Hermitage appellation and have vines spread across 9 of the finest lieux-dits, with the Rouge being sourced from the best parcels with vine age ranging between 50 and 85+ years. The 1985 is now fully mature and exhibits a wonderfully savoury profile, with notes of forest floor, woodsmoke and exotic spices, but continues to also offer delicate berry fruits at its core. Perfect for drinking now, a quick decant to remove sediment is advised but it should not need a long aeration.

Moderately saturated medium red. Maturing aromas of grilled game, smoke and vanilla, along with a lively floral nuance. Sweet, bright red fruit flavors supported by sound acidity. Has more vivacity than all but the finest 1985 Burgundies. Chave says this is just embarking on its plane of peak drinkability and will become even suppler with more bottle age, but I'd drink it over the next several years for its freshness and fruit.Stephen Tanzer1st July 1999
