Hermitage Les Bessards 1999 from Delas is a Syrah from the Northern Rhône. This single-vineyard cuvée is sourced from the steep, granite-rich heart of the Hermitage hill, widely considered the appellation’s finest site for structural intensity. 1999 was an exceptional vintage, yielding fruit with immense concentration and phenolic ripeness. After over 25 years, the wine has developed a complex bouquet of iron, blood orange, leather and dark chocolate. Its tannins are firm and grainy, reflecting the iron-heavy soils of the Bessards slope. This bottling remains remarkably youthful, showing a dense core of black fruit and a long, mineral-driven finish that highlights the raw power of the site.

Vinous
Medium ruby. Liqueur-like aromas of kirsch and maraschino cherry, along with a note of coffee. Suave, minerally and rather reticent on the front half, then expands on the back, showing great volume and velvety texture and lovely penetrating sweetness. Finishes with powerful, thick, totally ripe tannins. A profound wine with great potential, but the Landonne is more expressive today.Stephen Tanzer1st January 2002
