Hermitage Guigal 1989 is a mature Syrah red wine from the renowned Hermitage appellation in the Rhône Valley. This vintage presents a complex interplay of aromas including smoked meats, black olives and hints of iron. The palate reveals a structured density, with firm tannins that have softened over time, indicating its age. Guigal`s Hermitage wines often include fruit from multiple lieux-dits to create a layered profile. The 1989 vintage, while robust, showcases the restraint of Guigal’s winemaking.

Readers may still be able to find some of Guigal`s 1989 Hermitage in the marketplace. Now that it has been in the bottle several years, the wine has taken on some firmness and the tannin appears more noticeable. Less concentrated than the knock-out 1990, the 1989 reveals a tight but promising nose of minerals, blackcurrants, and roasted herbs, great richness, full body, and significant power and tannin. - Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Benchmark for Côte-Rôtie excellence

Founded in the village of Ampuis by Etienne Guigal in 1946, Domaine Guigal is one of the most revered and unwaveringly consistent estates in the Rhône Valley, and is often seen as a benchmark for Côte-Rôtie Syrah. A pioneer of the single-vineyard concept in this appellation Guigal is best known for its top three wines, known affectionately as the 'La-Las', which is short for La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque – the domaine's top Syrah vineyards .

Other notable vineyards of this 75-hectare estate include La Doriane (the source of Guigal's Condrieu), Ex-Voto (used for Hermitage) and Vignes de l'Hospice (the source of one of Guigal's top St-Joseph Syrahs). All of these have become benchmark wines of their respective appellations. The Crozes-Hermitage appellation completes the roster of Northern Rhône estate vineyards.

Since 2006, Guigal has made a substantial investment in appellations of the Southern Rhône, using top-quality purchased fruit from trusted growers in Châteaneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Tavel and the Côtes du Rhône.
