E Guigal Hermitage 1988 is a full-bodied single-vineyard red wine produced from 100% Syrah in the Hermitage appellation of the northern Rhône Valley. The hill of Hermitage, located on the east bank of the Tain river, is the most celebrated vineyard site in the northern Rhône region. With its steep, terraced slopes on soils of predominantly decomposed granite, this iconic site has long considered to be the birthplace of Syrah. " "The 1988 is Guigal`s best red Hermitage since the 1983. More concentrated than either the 1989 or 1990, it exhibits an opaque, dark ruby/purple colour, and a huge, relatively undeveloped but promising perfume of cassis and minerals. In the mouth there is sensational concentration, dramatic flavours that are still in their infancy, and plenty of robust tannins in the impressively long finish." Robert Parker, 1997

Benchmark for Côte-Rôtie excellence

Founded in the village of Ampuis by Etienne Guigal in 1946, Domaine Guigal is one of the most revered and unwaveringly consistent estates in the Rhône Valley, and is often seen as a benchmark for Côte-Rôtie Syrah. A pioneer of the single-vineyard concept in this appellation Guigal is best known for its top three wines, known affectionately as the 'La-Las', which is short for La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque – the domaine's top Syrah vineyards .

Other notable vineyards of this 75-hectare estate include La Doriane (the source of Guigal's Condrieu), Ex-Voto (used for Hermitage) and Vignes de l'Hospice (the source of one of Guigal's top St-Joseph Syrahs). All of these have become benchmark wines of their respective appellations. The Crozes-Hermitage appellation completes the roster of Northern Rhône estate vineyards.

Since 2006, Guigal has made a substantial investment in appellations of the Southern Rhône, using top-quality purchased fruit from trusted growers in Châteaneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Tavel and the Côtes du Rhône.
