Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle 2012 is a mature Syrah from the hill of Hermitage in the northern Rhône valley. This cuvée is named after the tiny chapel which sits atop the hill of Hermitage overlooking the river Tain which runs through the valley. The chapel was purchased by the Jaboulet family in 1919 and has give then name to their iconic Hermitage red ever since. "The grand vin is the 2012 Hermitage la Chapelle, and it lives up to the billing in 2012. Coming mostly from the Meal and aged in just 20% new French oak, it’s a blockbuster that exhibits thrilling, mineral-drenched notes of spiced dark fruits, beef blood, black olive and toast. Full-bodied, deep, layered and incredibly concentrated, it has a stacked mid-palate and enough tannin to warrant another 4-5 years of bottle age. It will have 2-3 decades of overall prime drinking, and certainly evolve for longer. The revamped Jaboulet firm, under the leadership of Caroline Frey, seems to have settled in and are now producing one serious line-up of wines from throughout the Rhone Valley." Wine Advocate, 2014

Saturated ruby. Seductively perfumed bouquet displays suave black and blue fruit liqueur, potpourri and incense aromas underscored by a smoky mineral quality. Gains power and spiciness with air, picking up a sexy floral pastille quality that builds in the glass. Sweet, palate-coating blueberry and cherry-cola flavors are superbly concentrated yet lively thanks to juicy acidity and a zesty peppery nuance. Strikingly vibrant, linear and long on the finish, with the mineral and floral notes emphatically repeating.Josh Raynolds1st February 2015

Grilled raspberry, cumin, incense, sandalwood, smoked earth, tobacco leaf. Delivers a concentrated umami character, with black chocolate, red peppers, soy. Tannins remain intense and structured, and needs a little longer to fully resolve - something that is particularly highlighted when tasting against these melted older vintages.
