Hermitage La Chapelle from Paul Jaboulet Aîné is an iconic red wine from the Rhône Valley. It is regarded as one of the top expressions of Hermitage, the prestigious appellation known for producing powerful and age-worthy Syrah wines. The 1996 vintage is particularly known for its concentration, complexity and longevity. The wine boasts a seamless balance of fruit and structure, combining notes of dark fruits, spices, and hints of earthiness. A showstopper.

Autumnal colour and flavours, in its tertiary window but still with beautifully fragrant dark fruits, melted tannins, saffron, tobacco leaf, olive pit and cumin. Charming and effortless, layered and nuanced. Today owned by Caroline Frey, at this point by the Jaboulet family. Tasted the same week as a wider vertical of La Chapelle.Jane Anson27th August 2025

Saturated ruby-red. Brooding aromas of cassis, spice and woodsmoke, along with port-like notes of chocolate and damp earth. Thick, silky and a bit roasted in the mouth, with chocolate and game flavors. Still in a rather oxidative phase, as this wine often is in the year or two following the bottling. But has the acidity and strong tannic structure for a long, slow evolution in bottle. Very long, chewy finish.Stephen Tanzer1st January 1999
