Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle 1995 is a mature Syrah from the hill of Hermitage in the northern Rhône valley. This cuvée is named after the tiny chapel which sits atop the hill of Hermitage overlooking the river Tain which runs through the valley. The chapel was purchased by the Jaboulet family in 1919 and has give then name to their iconic Hermitage red ever since. "A saturated purple/plum colour is accompanied by gamy, blackberry, and smoked meat aromas. While this wine is rich and full-bodied, the question mark reflects its gritty, astringent tannin and austere personality. It is a large-scaled, boldly-flavoured, but ferociously tannic La Chapelle." Wine Advocate, 2000

Dark ruby colour and it seems young and concentrated both visually and on the aromatics. Dark, cool blue fruits, grilled cedar and campfire smoke, cold ash, lovely character. Firm tannic architecture, could benefit from 30 minutes in a carafe or just leave it in your glass for a while. This feels to me like it is on the plateau and not going anywhere, and you might just strike it lucky with a great bottle at the right time.
