Hermitage La Chapelle Jaboulet 1978 is a red wine from the granitic terraces of the Hermitage hill, primarily sourced from Le Méal, Les Bessards and Les Greffieux. The vintage was cool and dry, producing small berries of exceptional concentration and structure. Mature aromas of leather, dried violet and smoked meat are interwoven with black olive, truffle and iron. The palate is silken yet firmly defined, its tannins now resolved but still giving shape to the savoury, mineral fruit. Acidity remains vivid, sustaining length and balance through a long, resonant finish that exemplifies classic, old-vine Hermitage.

A collection of stunning older northern Rhônes puts a strong exclamation point on this night of fabulous food, wine and conversation. The 1978 La Chapelle from Jaboulet is full of deep, woodsy aromas and flavors. Still, deep, rich and positively explosive in the glass, the 1978 is a real treat to taste and drink. The 1978 remains remarkably youthful, even if it has (understandably) faded just a touch since I tasted it a few years ago. Antonio Galloni1st December 2015
