With family history dating back centuries and ownership of some of the best parcels of vines in the Northern Rhône, Jean Louis Chave is undoubtedly one of the greatest producers of Hermitage Rouge and Blanc. The blend for the Blanc is almost always 80% Marsanne and 20% Roussanne, vinified in a combination of mostly stainless steel and French oak casks, before maturation in new and used oak barrels for up to 18 months. The 2001 is rich but elegant and balanced, with flavours of tangerine, lime zest, stone fruits, white flowers and honey. Now nearing its peak, this would be wonderful alongside rich, creamy fish dishes.

Pure, subtle aromas of yellow plum, spices, flowers and nutty oak. At once sweet and gripping, with a glyceral middle given shape by flavors of lemon skin and spices. Very subtle and very long, finishing with terrific backbone.Stephen Tanzer1st January 2005
