Henri Giraud Hommage au Pinot Noir NV is a non-vintage, blanc de noirs Champagne produced by Henri Giraud in Aÿ, France. Established in the Grand Cru village of Aÿ in the 17th Century, Champagne Henri Giraud is one of the oldest family-run wine estates in the Champagne region. The estate is managed by Claude Giraud, 12th generation of the Giraud-Hémart family, and a vigneron especially renowned for his craftsmanship with Pinot Noir. Generally Giraud`s wines are vinified in oak barrels, lending a subtly oxidative richness to the final Champagnes. Hommage au Pinot Noir is matured for 36 months in bottle. Toasty with soft dried and red-berry fruit notes, a saline minerality and subtle spiciness.

Anchored in the 2020 vintage and incorporating one-third wine from a perpetual reserve initiated in 1990, Giraud’s NV Hommage au Pinot Noir was disgorged in April 2024 with a dosage of five grams per liter. Sourced primarily from Aÿ and supplemented by fruit from Mutigny, Avenay-Val-d`Or, Dizy and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, it was matured in barrels between three to six years old. It unfurls with aromas of mirabelle plum, candied orange and apricot mingling with exotic spices. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, fleshy and precise, with vibrant acidity and a long finish. While the 2021-based releases show a more incisive profile, this 2020-based bottling offers greater gourmandise and textural appeal. - Kristaps Karklins

The NV Hommage au Pinot Noir is a blend from Aÿ and five villages in its periphery, based on 2020. This is an especially airy, aromatic Pinot Noir-based Champagne. The Hommage sees an additional time of six to nine months in tank after aging in oak. Late bottling yields a particularly subtle Champagne, one that emphasizes nuance more than power. The Giraud-Hémart family have cultivated grapes in the Champagne region since 1625. Based in Äy, the family only started to produce wine for themselves in 1990. The current owner of the house is 12th-generation Claude Giraud. His son, Emmanuelle Giraud-Patour manages the company while his son-in-law, Sébastien Le Golvet, is the chef de cave.

Henri Giraud’s top cuvée, Fût de Chêne, is a Pinot Noir-dominant blend with a smaller proportion of Chardonnay, using the ‘Petit Pinot’ clone of Pinot Noir which has been grown solely in Aÿ since 1804. Meanwhile the new Esprit Nature cuvée is a Pinot Noir-dominant blend with Chardonnay and 50% reserve wine, with maturation taking place in small casks and ovoid vats. Production at Henri Giraud is limited to just 250,000 bottles a year – a remarkably small number in comparison with the Grandes Marques, which dictates that demand is always high.
