Henri Giraud Blanc du Craie NV is a non-vintage, blanc de blancs Champagne produced by Henri Giraud in Aÿ, France. Established in the Grand Cru village of Aÿ in the 17th Century, Champagne Henri Giraud is one of the oldest family-run wine estates in the Champagne region. The estate is managed by Claude Giraud, 12th generation of the Giraud-Hémart family, and a vigneron especially renowned for his craftsmanship with Pinot Noir. The Blanc du Craie is a blanc de blancs using composed Chardonnay from the Montagne de Reims. It includes 10% of reserve wine from Grand Cru vineyards in Aÿ. Fruity and floral with elegant flavours of peach, lemon verbena and honeysuckle.

The NV Blanc de Craie is 100% Chardonnay based on 2020, mostly from Aÿ, with some fruit from Louvois. Citrus peel, chalk, menthol and white pepper are all amplified by the natural breadth of Aÿ and the significant presence of reserve wines. Readers will find a Champagne of notable texture that will be very versatile at the dinner table. This is an especially fine edition. Disgorged: February 24, 2024.

Crafted predominantly from the 2021 vintage and augmented by approximately 33% wine from a perpetual reserve established in 1995, Giraud’s NV Blanc de Craie is sourced from the villages of Aÿ and Louvois. The most recent release was disgorged in July 2024 with a dosage of five grams per liter. Aromatically, it evokes notes of lemon tart, ripe pear and anise, mingling with spring flowers. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, racy and linear, with a pillowy mousse and a long, saline finish. The wine was vinified entirely in barrels ranging from one to six years of age. - Kristaps Karklins

The Giraud-Hémart family have cultivated grapes in the Champagne region since 1625. Based in Äy, the family only started to produce wine for themselves in 1990. The current owner of the house is 12th-generation Claude Giraud. His son, Emmanuelle Giraud-Patour manages the company while his son-in-law, Sébastien Le Golvet, is the chef de cave.

Henri Giraud’s top cuvée, Fût de Chêne, is a Pinot Noir-dominant blend with a smaller proportion of Chardonnay, using the ‘Petit Pinot’ clone of Pinot Noir which has been grown solely in Aÿ since 1804. Meanwhile the new Esprit Nature cuvée is a Pinot Noir-dominant blend with Chardonnay and 50% reserve wine, with maturation taking place in small casks and ovoid vats. Production at Henri Giraud is limited to just 250,000 bottles a year – a remarkably small number in comparison with the Grandes Marques, which dictates that demand is always high.
