Henri Giraud Argonne Magnum 2014 is a complex wine, crafted from a blend of 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay. The grapes are sourced from the Aÿ Grand Cru, where they`re vinified and aged in new barrels from the Argonne Forest, imparting distinct oak characteristics. This wine reflects the producer’s commitment to traditional methods, with a focus on terroir expression. It undergoes minimal intervention, allowing the natural qualities of the grapes to shine through. Henri Giraud is notable for being one of the few Champagne houses that still utilise exclusively small barrels for fermentation and ageing.

The 2014 Argonne was much more open when I tasted it last year, which is probably a good sign for its long-term aging prospects. Tangerine oil, white flowers, spice, brioche and a kick of sweet oak all run through the 2014. More than anything else, I am struck by the wine's linear intensity and drive. Argonne is 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay done in 100% new oak. Disgorged: December 14, 2022. Antonio Galloni1st May 2023

A Boutique Grand Marque

The Giraud-Hémart family have cultivated grapes in the Champagne region since 1625. Based in Äy, the family only started to produce wine for themselves in 1990. The current owner of the house is 12th-generation Claude Giraud. His son, Emmanuelle Giraud-Patour manages the company while his son-in-law, Sébastien Le Golvet, is the chef de cave.

Henri Giraud’s top cuvée, Fût de Chêne, is a Pinot Noir-dominant blend with a smaller proportion of Chardonnay, using the ‘Petit Pinot’ clone of Pinot Noir which has been grown solely in Aÿ since 1804. Meanwhile the new Esprit Nature cuvée is a Pinot Noir-dominant blend with Chardonnay and 50% reserve wine, with maturation taking place in small casks and ovoid vats. Production at Henri Giraud is limited to just 250,000 bottles a year – a remarkably small number in comparison with the Grandes Marques, which dictates that demand is always high.
