Hambledon Vineyard has a long and interesting history having been established in the early fifties. The Première Cuvée is a blend of mostly Chardonnay with lesser parts Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, mostly from the superb 2013 harvest, with barrel-aged reserve wines from 2010. This is an immensely enjoyable and complex wine with lovely notes of confit lemon, blossom, apricot and red apple.

The NV Première Cuvée comes from pre-selected grapes, 14% fermented in French oak, the remainder in stainless steel with a minimum 46 months on the lees. It has a dosage of 2g/L. Initially steely and reserved, it only takes a couple of swirls to reveal more leesy aromas, touches of baked bread and yellow flowers; there is fine definition here. The palate is well balanced with a touch of sour lemon on the entry that segues into a leesy midpalate. This is a classy English sparkling wine: taut and focused with saline notes defining the energetic finish. Recommended. Neal Martin1st July 2020

58% Chardonnay, 24% Pinot Noir, 18% Pinot Meunier.
Creamy and biscuity with a saline note to contrast the very rich dairy-dominated nose. Much crisper than expected from the nose – but this is England, after all – and the fruit is fresh and linear. Finishes simply and easily. (RH)
