This is a rare bottle of single cask whisky distilled at Hakushu in 1998 and released by Suntory in 2012, exclusively for the domestic market. The nose is quite fruity, including ripe apples and citrus, tempered by a bit of oak, vanilla and a soft touch of peat. The palate reveals a very spicy whisky, with plenty of peppers, chillies and herbs, followed by green notes of grass and hay.

Japan's Forest Distillery

Located the foothills of Mount Kaikomagatake in the southern Japanese Alps of Yamanashi Province, Hakushu distillery was founded in 1973 by Keizo Saji, the son of the founder of Suntory. The distillery’s stunning location in at an elevation of 700m above sea level in the heart of a protected forest, along with source of soft, mineral-rich alpine water, produces single malts of impressive elegance and nuance.

In the 1980s Hakushu was the largest distillery in the world, producing in the region of 30 million litres of whisky per year. Nowadays it produces a broad range of whisky styles from its 16 stills, from light to heavily peated malts, however the house style is herbal, lightly smoky and evocative of Hakushu’s mountain forest surroundings.
