Blandy’s HM Borges Sercial 1971 is a fortified wine from the island of Madeira. Sercial is the driest of the noble Madeira varieties and this bottling has undergone decades of cask ageing in the traditional canteiro system. It features a pungent nose of walnut husks, orange peel, sea salt and petrol, with a bracingly acidic and bone-dry palate that shows remarkable tension through a sharp, citrus-inflected finish. The controlled oxidation creates a stability that is unique to this style of wine.

RS 52 g/l. Mid-deep amber, with some opaqueness of sediment, and a broad, olive rim. Mellow, old leather, smoky tones, walnut skin, caramel and preserve lemon peels. Vibrant acidity, off-dry sweetness, with cooked citrus, caramel, walnut skin, smoky spice and some saltiness. Some warmth on the finish, but lovely, citrussy length and great freshness. Fine.
