Gusbourne Blanc de Blancs 2013 is a traditional method sparkling wine produced from 100% Chardonnay in Appledore, Kent. This vintage reflects a cool spring and a late harvest in October, yielding fruit with high natural acidity and precision. The winemaking process involves whole-bunch pressing and natural settling for 24 to 36 hours followed by primary fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel, with a small percentage of the juice fermented in old oak barrels to add textural breadth. This wine underwent full malolactic conversion and remained on its lees for a minimum of 42 months before disgorgement with a dosage of 9g/l. The palate is defined by a racy citrus backbone of lemon peel and green apple, transitioning into secondary notes of toasted brioche and hazelnut from extended autolysis.

Sweeter, riper fruit than the 2013 Brut Reserve. Quite austere in some ways – the fruit is tart and piqued, but has a wonderful compact intensity on the palate. This is a great candidate for ageing – and with time in the glass, the flavour range is becoming more and more expressive with toast, salt and smoke. Still needs time in bottle to evolve. (RH)
