The little brother of Sassicaia, this is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. The 2018 exhibits rich and concentrated fruit but manages to retain superb balance and sophistication. Now a standard-bearer for the quality of Bolgheri this should drink well for at least 10 years.

A deft and bright blend to serve with a platter of creamy Camembert wedges, the 2018 Guidalberto is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon supplemented with 40% Merlot, showing a smooth and silky delivery of aromas with black fruit and sour cherry backed by spice, pressed flower and tilled earth. These are fragrant and delicate results fitted to a medium-weight finish that is driven by freshness and elegant tannins. This is an important release of 415,000 bottles. - Monica Larner

San Guido’s 2018 Guidalberto is soft, open-knit and inviting. Sweet dark cherry, cinnamon, licorice and new leather fill out the layers in an undeniably attractive Guidalberto that will drink beautifully upon release. Finesse and elegance are the signatures. The 2018 is a terrific choice for drinking now, while some of the more powerful vintages of Guidalberto come together, or while waiting for its sibling, Sassicaia.Antonio Galloni1st January 2021

First vintage 2000. Near-final, 90%-finished blend, made in January for this tasting. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot. Merlot grown on a neighbouring estate, outside Bolgheri.
Restrained, cedar, graphite and black plum – needs a lot of coaxing out of the glass. Fresh, with bright cassis and spice on the palate. This is attractive and finely structured, and could be broached now, though will benefit from a year or so longer in bottle.

The Original Super Tuscan

Tenuta San Guido’s flagship red wine, Sassicaia wine, has become a Tuscan icon in its own right. This fine wine, made from a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, is characterized by all the hallmarks that have established it as one of Italy’s standout wines: sumptuous fruit, fine texture, beautiful perfume, and effortless balance. A prototype of Super Tuscan wines, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta decided to experiment with Bordeaux varietals, noting a similarity between the geography of Tuscany and Graves in southwest France.

Early vintages of this iconic Italian wine were only available to taste at the winery. The 1968 vintage was the first Sassicaia wine to be sold to the public, and in 1994, Sassicaia was granted its own official DOC: Bolgheri-Sassicaia DOC. Early vintages received mixed reviews, but the introduction of Tronçais oak barriques in the late 1970s saw a rise in quality that has been maintained ever since. Alongside the Grand Vin, the Tenuta San Guido estate produces a second wine, Guidalberto, and a third wine, La Difese.

Sassicaia's impact on the wine world is profound, exemplifying the fine elegance of Tuscan wine. With a dedication to quality and tradition, Tenuta San Guido continues to set the benchmark for fine wines globally.
