The 2022 vintage of Guado al Tasso captures the character of a challenging yet ultimately rewarding growing season in Bolgheri. Persistent drought from late winter through much of summer led to an early start across the vine’s growth cycle, including budbreak, flowering, fruit set, and veraison. While the dry conditions limited vegetative growth and produced smaller berries, timely rainfall in mid-August brought much-needed relief at a crucial point in the ripening process. The result was fruit of exceptional health and concentration, combining richness with freshness - a hallmark of balance in a warm, dry year.

Harvest began with Merlot in early September, followed by Cabernet Franc and concluding with Cabernet Sauvignon towards the end of the month. The final blend reflects the estate’s meticulous parcel-by-parcel approach, showcasing the elegance and structure that have made Guado al Tasso one of Bolgheri’s most admired wines.

The 2022 Guado al Tasso is laced with hints of plum, espresso, nutmeg, licorice, incense, lavender and dried herbs. Medium in body, with fine persistence and tons of class, Guado al Tasso has a lot to offer. There is a bit of tightness that is a reminder of the challenges of the growing season. A burst of dark fruit, exotic spice and sweet spice punctuates the finale. This is a terrific wine for the year. The blend is 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Cabernet Franc and 25% Merlot. Late-season September rains were especially penalizing for Cabernet Sauvignon, hence the greater presence of Cabernet Franc and Merlot in the blend.Antonio Galloni25th March 2025

An Antinori Icon

While technically a wine rather than a winery, Marchesi Antinori's flagship red wine, Supertuscan Tignanello, has become an icon in its own right. Produced from the Tignanello estate, this wine is one of Italy’s most recognized and celebrated fine wines. Tignanello is a blend of mostly Sangiovese wines with lesser parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, showcasing the Antinori family's mastery in winemaking.

Situated in the heart of Chianti Classico, in the gently rolling hillsides between the Greve and Pesa river valleys, the Tenuta Tignanello vineyard produces these influential wines. Tignanello was the first Sangiovese to be aged in barriques, the first contemporary red wine blended with untraditional varieties (specifically Cabernet), and one of the first red wines in the Chianti Classico region not to use white grapes. This innovation has made it a modern red wine that stands out among its peers.

The Antinori estate also produces a superb Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon Grappa, a full-bodied Bordeaux-style red called Guado al Tasso, and delicate yet refined white wines from Castello della Sala, adding to its portfolio of iconic wines. The legacy of the Antinori family is evident in every bottle of these exceptional Italian wines.
