Gruaud Larose 2006 presents a deep garnet hue, revealing intricate layers of blackcurrant and plum on the palate. The wine showcases a structured profile, with assertive tannins that impart a firm yet not overwhelming grip. As it opens, notes of cedar and subtle earthiness emerge, hinting at its maturation potential. While it remains shy of its full tertiary complexity, there is an evident trajectory towards developing savoury nuances. Gruaud Larose, established in 1725, has a long-standing reputation for producing wines that reflect the essence of Saint-Julien.

The 2006 Gruaud Larose has a very conservative nose with smoke, tobacco and light attic-like scents. It just needs more fruit and more presence. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, clove and sage infusing the black fruit. This is a bit rough around the edges, though I do not find the metallic tincture that marked the previous bottle. It’s just not a particularly memorable Gruaud Larose. Drink now. Tasted at the Gruaud Larose vertical at the château in February 2023. Neal Martin27th March 2024

Deep garnet-brick in color, the 2006 Gruaud Larose is made from 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot. Evolved notes of prunes, baked blackcurrants, and dusty soil jump from the glass, followed by hints of iron ore, cigar box, and incense. The light to medium-bodied palate is chewy with herbal and mineral sparks intertwined with the dried berry flavors, finishing a little rustic.Lisa Perrotti-Brown9th January 2024
