Gruaud Larose 2012 is a Second Growth Saint-Julien sourced from the Gruaud Larose estate`s sprawling plateau of deep quaternary gravels. This 2012 bottling is a classic and savoury expression, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and accented by Merlot and Petit Verdot. It offers an earthy profile of cedar, tobacco leaf and dark plums, with a sturdy tannic backbone that has begun to integrate after years of bottle age. While the vintage was famously difficult for late-ripening varieties, the terroir of Gruaud Larose provided enough drainage and heat retention to produce a wine of reliable depth and traditional Saint-Julien character. It is a dependable, food-friendly Bordeaux that showcases the estate`s signature brawny elegance.

The 2012 Gruaud Larose is perhaps even more austere than the previous vintage. It shows tobacco and cigar smoke and touches of autumn leaves, but it (again) needs more fruit concentration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit and fine acidity. It's a bit conservative compared to its peers, but like the previous vintage, it finishes positively with freshness and insistent grip, plus a fine black pepper note on the aftertaste. Drink now and over the next decade. Tasted at the Gruaud Larose vertical at the château in February 2023. Neal Martin27th March 2024

Deep garnet in color, the 2012 Gruaud Larose needs a bit of shaking to wake up notes of plum pudding, raisin cake, and dried mulberries plus wafts of tobacco leaf, new leather, and rusty nails. The medium-bodied palate is rugged, chewy, and a little rustic, with soft acidity and a spicy lift on the finish.Lisa Perrotti-Brown9th January 2024

Blackish crimson. Sweet, almost cooked nose. Very sweet indeed – almost violet cachou-like. Then some palate-pinching effect on the finish. Not the most appetising 2012 but very flattering. But I think it could be a bit tiring after a while. (JR)
