A classified St-Julien Second Growth, Château Gruaud Larose is a classic old-school Bordeaux. Highly favourable climatic conditions resulted in a grape harvest with exceptional richness in sugar and great concentration of phenolic compounds, producing a Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot dominant blend. Characterised by its cassis and smoky profile, with savoury, meaty complexity and leather notes. Here is a wine that is drinking well now.
94 Vinous
The 1990 Gruaud Larose has been hit 'n' miss over various bottles, not unlike the '90 Montrose. This was a hit. It has a very youthful bouquet with dark berry fruit, tar and mint, certainly far less Brettanomyces than other examples. The palate is fresh and well structured, with hints of black truffle intertwined with the red fruit, a tad spicier than the Lagrange with a dab of liquorice for good measure on the satisfying finish. Excellent. Tasted single blind at the 1990 Bordeaux dinner at Medlar. Neal Martin2nd December 2025
94 Jancis Robinson
Meaty, smoky, sweet berry and black currant characteristics intertwined with roasted herb, charcoal, new saddle leather, and bloody steak juice-like notes are found in this lush, full-bodied, opulent wine. It is a fully mature 1990 that, given its depth and intensity, should continue to evolve for at least another 15 years. Release price: ($350.00/case) Robert Parker30th June 2009
