Griotte-Chambertin Domaine Fourrier 2005 is a Grand Cru from the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation in Burgundy. Winemaker Jean-Marie Fourrier, known for his hands-off philosophy, produces wines that reflect the vineyard`s unique identity. Griotte-Chambertin benefits from its exceptional east-facing slope, which provides optimal sunlight and drainage. This vintage exhibits a blend of ripe red cherries and herbal undertones on the nose, demonstrating a notable complexity. On the palate, the wine displays a fine structure with a clear mineral backbone, characteristic of this prized vineyard.

Each of the Clos St.-Jacques’s five owners, Fourrier observes, owns a strip from top to bottom, and the resultant diversity of microclimate and soil structure he thinks in part accounts for the complexity and balance of the wines. If there is additional virtue to be discovered in official grand cru terroir, Fourrier opines, then in the case of his 2005 Griottes Chambertin, that consists not in weight or structure but in elegance and refinement. Subtly chalky yet juicily refreshing and with striking fresh black raspberry fruit purity, this beauty boasts a silky texture and a polished finish mingling licorice, cinnamon and clear, sweet fresh raspberry fruit. Its harmony and refinement make it almost irresistible even now, but no doubt a decade or more in the cellar will be rewarded, too. - David Schildknecht

Good deep red. More reticent on the nose than the Clos Saint-Jacques, as with the same wines in 2006: blueberry, black raspberry and musky animal nuances. Silky in texture but currently showing much less sweetness than the Clos Saint-Jacques. In fact, this is downright inscrutable today. Amazingly, my recorked bottle was still full of life eight days later, showing sweet tannins and a redder quality to its fruit. This one will need a good decade in the cellar.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2008

Poise and Balance

Jean-Marie Fourrier has been at the helm of his family domaine since the mid 1990s and has steadily risen to become one of Gevrey-Chambertin's most important vignerons. Having served an apprentice under the famous Henri Jayer before a brief stint at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon, Jean-Marie returned to France with a clear vision to raise to improve the quality of his wines to be the equal of any in the Côte de Nuits.

Grapes are destemmed after picking and fermentation is kept on the cooler side. A 36 - 48 hour maceration precedes the fermentation, punching down is manual and malolactic fermentation is restricted through temperature control. These are superbly elegant wines which push their ethereal fruit character to the fore.
