Château Grillet is an appellation in the Rhône Valley which is planted solely to one permitted variety, Viognier, and is occupied by a single producer who shares the same name. It has been cultivated since Roman times, was granted appellation status in 1936 and even declared a National Heritage site in 1976. The appellation, vineyard and winery were owned by the Neyret-Gachet family since 1827 but was sold to Francois Pinault of Château Latour in 2011. Grillet has an exceptional track record for ageing and the 1997 should now be in its absolute prime for drinking.
