It took dynamite and bulldozers to clear the way for Laurent Vaillé to plant his vines but, in Grange des Pères, he has created one of the finest terroir-driven cult wineries in France. Bottled as Vin de Pays de l’Hèrault, the Rouge is a unique blend of mostly Syrah and Mourvèdre with lesser parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Counoise from glacial scree and limestone vineyards.
The 2013 is wonderfully expressive, offering up notes of rich black cherry, raspberry, wild herbs, crack black pepper, liquorice, leather and stony minerality. Concentrated yet elegant this is a medium-bodied release that is a good early drinker but will develop nicely in the cellar.

Slightly deeper ruby in color than the 2011, the 2013 Grange des Peres offers a terrific bouquet of black cherries, black raspberries, peppery herbs, wet rocks and hints of new saddle leather. This medium-bodied, nicely concentrated, elegant red is already hard to resist (it benefits from a decant) and will keep for a decade.Jeb Dunnuck28th April 2017
