The 1996 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands Echézeaux is a Grand Cru Burgundy Pinot Noir from one of the Burgundy region`s most prestigious producers. DRC manages a 3.52-hectare section of the Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru vineyard. The excellent 1996 vintage is recognised for its balance and structure. In the glass, it displays a deep ruby hue. Aromas suggest ripe red fruit, earthy undertones and subtle spice. The palate reveals a robust body, supported by fresh acidity and refined tannins. This wine is designed for extended ageing, especially in magnum format.

The 1996 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru is a wine that I have not tasted since bottling. It has a beautifully, well-defined bouquet with black fruit rather than red, briary, juniper and subtle tobacco aromas. With aeration, more iodine-like scents join the chorus line. The palate is medium-bodied and beautifully balanced, not quite as precision-tooled as the Romanée-Saint-Vivant, yet rather penetrating on the oyster shell finish. Impressive - I wonder if this has more to give? Tasted at the 1243 Club in Beaune. Neal Martin1st May 2019
