DRC Grands Echézeaux 2021 is a medium- to full-bodied red wine from the Grand Cru climat of Grands Echézeaux in the Côte de Nuits. With a rich heritage that goes back to the 16th century, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti needs no introduction. The estate, which is co-owned by the Villaine and Leroy families, is the largest proprietor of Grand Cru vineyards in Vosne-Romanée. The domaine has always cultivated its vines according to the principles of organic farming and in 2017 obtained the Biodyvin biodynamic certification. On the 2021 Grands Echézeaux. "Pale-rimmed mid-red, with a gentler expression of the cool/peppery/herbal theme, more quiet-voiced. Medium-full, fresh, very fine in tannin; an immediate sweetness to taste here, an unexpected, surprising core fruit, delicate but clear, a sort of gear change in concentration and matter, plus a touch of black-fruit ripeness, too. Long and succulent, not exactly rich but clear-cut and distinctive, a clinging mezzoforte clarity, a gently enveloping character, and the sweet, cool fragrance of the year, with gorgeous, throat-mantling, fruit-fragrant length. A particularly lovely, delicate, discreet Grands Échézeaux."Michael Schuster, 2024

The 2021 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru is laced with hints of kirsch, cedar, orange peel, mint and dried flowers. I find it a bit disjoined today, light and fleeting in feel, its direction more inward than outward. Time in the glass brings out lovely floral and savory aromatics, but the 2021 is not totally put together today. In many recent years, the Grands Echézeaux has been quite showy, but it is the least expressive wine in this tasting. Antonio Galloni12th March 2024
