Based in the village of Vosne-Romanée, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti – or simply ‘DRC’ – is undoubtedly the most prestigious wine producer in Burgundy. Since 1942, the estate is co-owned by the de Villaine and Leroy families, with Alexandre Bernier as cellar master. DRC produces only Grand Cru wines, such as this Grands-Echézeaux from a 3.53-hectare parcel. The 1996 vintage is marked by a remarkable concentration and depth around red cherries, plums, blackberries, spices and wet leaves. The wine is quite structured, but also full of energy, with a long life ahead of it.

The 1996 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru is a wine that I have not tasted since bottling. It has a beautifully, well-defined bouquet with black fruit rather than red, briary, juniper and subtle tobacco aromas. With aeration, more iodine-like scents join the chorus line. The palate is medium-bodied and beautifully balanced, not quite as precision-tooled as the Romanée-Saint-Vivant, yet rather penetrating on the oyster shell finish. Impressive - I wonder if this has more to give? Tasted at the 1243 Club in Beaune. Neal Martin1st May 2019
