Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, or simply ‘DRC’, is undoubtedly the most prestigious wine producer in Burgundy. The famous estate is co-owned by the Villaine and Leroy families and produces only Grand Cru wines, such as this Grands-Echézeaux, made from a 3.53-hectare parcel. This is a very rare bottle from the 1983 vintage, which is now fully mature and ready to be enjoyed.

The 1983 Grands-Echézeaux puts in a very decent performance, given that even this producer was not firing on all cylinders in this era, notwithstanding the season's challenges. Light and fragrant on the nose, there are traces of wild heather and thyme, well-defined if not quite as precise as the 1985 La Tâche tasted alongside. Leafy red fruit floats across the palate, tertiary in style, lightweight for a Grand Cru but well balanced and exuding Pinoté on the finish. Drink sooner rather than later. Tasted at Robert's dinner in Beaune.Neal Martin1st March 2023
