Grand Puy Lacoste 1990 is an intriguing vintage from the historic Haut-Médoc estate, known for its consistency and classic Bordeaux character. The wine typically reveals a deep ruby hue, complemented by aromas of blackcurrant, violets and subtle earthy notes. On the palate, it presents a structured profile with notable tannins and a balanced acidity, contributing to its ageing potential. This vintage showcases the estate`s traditional winemaking approach, with grapes sourced predominantly from vines growing on free-draining deep gravel soils.

The 1990 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a vintage that I drank regularly. It's always backward and compelling. I used to wonder whether it would ever come around. It has. This has a mesmerizing bouquet with black fruit, graphite, licorice and violet aromas. It just ratchets up through the gears with aeration. The palate is surfeit with sapid black fruit tones, slightly granular in texture and armed with firm backbone. Plenty of tobacco notes lace the finish. You know, for a 1990, it remains remarkably backward. This is a Pauillac aging at a glacial pace. Tasted at the WIMPS X-mas lunch at La Trompette.Neal Martin25th March 2025

Similar aged, lightening ruby to the 1990 served alongside it with turbot. Big and sweet and round – seems fuller, richer and a bit older and dustier than the 1989 served alongside. Very long and powerful. Wonderfully rich and opulent. Sweet and perhaps a little bit simpler than the 1989 – though it would work better than the 1989 with richer food. (JR)
