Schloss Gobelsburg Riesling Heiligenstein 2021 is a full-bodied, single-vineyard white wine from the Kamptal region of Austria. Schloss Gobelsburg is one of the oldest and most-respected wine producers in the Danube region of Austria. Particular renown is reserved for their single-vineyard releases. The Erste Lage (First Growth) Heiligenstein (meaning `rock of the saints`) is one of the most revered vineyard sites in Kamptal, producing long-aged wines with a pronounced mineral dimension. "Very striking nose of mirabelle and wild herbs. Quite some richness and creaminess (from long sur lie maturation) for the Heiligenstein vineyard site, but it is married to an elegant acidity and delicate spice. Very long herb and floral honey finish that’s simultaneously ripe, dark and cool. Still a bit shy. Drinkable now, but best from 2025." Stuart Pigott

The 2021 Ried Heiligenstein 1ÖTW shows a clear, intense and spicy nose of concentrated Riesling and apricot fruit. Rich and intense but also delicate and elegant on the palate, this is a complex yet sensual, persistently salty and aromatic Heiligenstein with plenty of substance and impressive length. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at Schloss Grafenegg, September 2023. - Stephan Reinhardt

Zöbing. South- and south-west-facing slope. Reddish brown sandstone with a high feldspar content, coarse conglomerates and minor siltstone. Certified integrated production (IP) and sustainable (Nachhaltig Austria).

Perfumed peach notes lead seamlessly into a rich and vibrant palate busting with playful juiciness. Lime and spice, rock dust. Delicate, drying grip with precise, stony contours etched deep and true. Beautiful and nuanced and, given time, that characteristic orange blossom evolves. A compelling and eloquent expression. (PS)

Legacy of fine Austrian winemaking

With a documented history dating back to 1171, when Cistercian monks acquired their first vineyards in Langenlois, Schloss Gobelsburg is one of the oldest wineries in Austria. Gobelsburg owes its reputation to those Cistercian monks whose devotion was embodied by the credo: ‘Qui bon vin boit dieu voit’ – ‘Whosoever drinks well sees God’. In 1996 the estate moved out of monastery hands, and is now managed by Michael and Eva Moosbrugger.

Schloss Gobelsburg produces some of the finest Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners in Austria: most famously from the stony terraces of Heiligenstein and Gaisberg for Riesling; and the more loess-concentrated sites of Steinsetz, Renner, Grub and Lamm for Grüner Veltliner. In addition to these terroir-driven, ageworthy, single-site whites, the estate produces a Brut Reserve, traditional-method sparkling wine, Pinot Noir and Sankt Laurent reds, as well as some haunting noble sweet wines. Also look out for the estate’s Tradition range: wines made using the traditional methods used in the 19th century that offer a true taste of Austria’s rich vinous history.
