Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Denis Mortet 2006 is a Pinot Noir from vines aged between 60 and 80 years across parcels in En Champ, Combe du Dessus and various sites north of Gevrey village. This was the first vintage under the full direction of Arnaud Mortet, who responded to the significant hail damage of the season by reducing extraction and wood influence compared to his father’s style. The wine was aged for 18 months in 75% new French oak maintaining a high acid profile and fine-grained tannins. On the palate, it reflects the old-vine concentration with notes of dark cherry, rose hip and undergrowth, balanced by a saline mineral edge and a glossy, supple texture.

Good full, bright red. Vibrant aromas of raspberry, cherry, dark chocolate and game; very Gevrey. Then creamier in the middle than the village offering, with more sweetness and mouth coverage to the dark fruit, mineral and spice flavors. Actually quite showy today, and balanced from the outset. Finishes with very good texture and length.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2009
