The 1999 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Goulots from Domaine Fourrier presents a classic expression of Pinot Noir from the Côte de Nuits. It offers a profile marked by red cherry and raspberry notes, alongside mineral undertones and a hint of earthiness. The wine is medium-bodied, reflecting a structure upheld by firm tannins and a fresh finish. Domaine Fourrier, under the direction of Jean-Marie Fourrier since 1994, emphasises a minimalist winemaking philosophy that seeks to highlight the terroir’s integrity. The vineyard spans 0.34 hectares and benefits from northeast-facing slopes with significant chalk content in its soils.

The 1999 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Goulots 1er Cru bides its time opening, but it's worth the wait, revealing gorgeous plush red fruit, rose petals and crushed stone scents. Wonderful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, surprisingly crisp for the vintage, pure and elegant. There's real panache to this Gevrey-Chambertin, which is some achievement given that this is not one of the top tier climats. Tasted at David Pope's 1999 Burgundy horizontal at Lorne.

Jean-Marie Fourrier has been at the helm of his family domaine since the mid 1990s and has steadily risen to become one of Gevrey-Chambertin's most important vignerons. Having served an apprentice under the famous Henri Jayer before a brief stint at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon, Jean-Marie returned to France with a clear vision to raise to improve the quality of his wines to be the equal of any in the Côte de Nuits.

Grapes are destemmed after picking and fermentation is kept on the cooler side. A 36 - 48 hour maceration precedes the fermentation, punching down is manual and malolactic fermentation is restricted through temperature control. These are superbly elegant wines which push their ethereal fruit character to the fore.
