Armand Rousseau is one of the most iconic and respected Domaines in Burgundy. Known for producing some of the world`s best Pinot Noir, Rousseau has holdings in several of the top vineyards in the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation, including the Premier Cru vineyard Lavaux Saint-Jacques. The 2018 vintage in Burgundy was a warm year, which resulted in wines with ripe, generous fruit characteristics and a more approachable style than some cooler vintages.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru sports a heavy reduction on the nose, which under blind conditions made it difficult to read. The palate is likewise difficult to work out. I must admit to being flummoxed by this wine, trying to peer underneath the reduction to assess the fruit quality. Dismissive at first, given my note out of barrel, I just think this was the wrong time to taste this and my score is based solely on its potential after three or four years. The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques offers up an attractive bouquet of red berries, cassis and plums mingled with nuances of candied peel, raw cocoa and grilled squab. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, supple and velvety, with a ripe core of fruit, melting tannins and succulent acids.William Kelley9th January 2020
