Based in Gevrey-Chambertin, Domaine Armand Rousseau unquestionably sits amongst the greats of Burgundy with a portfolio of wines from some of the most revered vineyards in the region. Bursting with bright red fruits and spice, yet at the same time boasting a wonderful elegance and balance.

The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St-Jacques 1er Cru feels a little muddled on the nose, lacking the delineation of its peers, which is perhaps disappointing considering the vineyard in question. The palate is better, offering crunchy red and black fruit, well-judged acidity, fine grip and a lovely saline, almost brine-like note that percolates through the fruit on the structured finish. If the aromatics improve with bottle age, this will turn into a great Lavaux Saint-Jacques, though I remain cautious as it seems to lose a little energy in the glass. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. Neal Martin1st November 2018
