Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin Combe Aux Moines 2005 is a medium-bodied Burgundy red wine from the Premier Ccru climat of Combe Aux Moines in the Gevrey-Chambertin commune of the Côte de Nuits. Founded in the 1850s, Domaine Fourrier is a prestigious wine producer based in Gevrey-Chambertin, in the Côte de Nuits. The estate is currently led by Jean-Marie Fourrier, the fifth-generation owner who took over the 10-hectare property from his father in the mid-1990s. This release hails from the Premier Cru ‘La Combe aux Moines’, one of the most elevated vineyards in Burgundy, reaching nearly 400 metres. "The 2005 Gevrey-Chambertin Combe aux Moines smells of bouillon, game, spices, fresh red fruits and a hint of caramel. In the mouth, it offers texturally more refined and more roasted, rich variations on the meaty, mineral themes introduced by Fourrier’s Les Goulots. For all of its ripeness and chalky, stony mineral density, and marrowy depth, this wine (like its siblings, hovering around a mere 13% alcohol) displays dynamism and lift." Wine Advocate, 2010

Good full red. Explosive aromas of red fruits, musky game and animal fur. Round, fresh and suave, with compelling sweetness of fruit and density of texture. For all its richness, this is impressively pure and fresh. Finishes with terrific juicy lift. It's hard to imagine that most of these 2005s won't shut down in the bottle at some point, but today most of them are all about sex appeal.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2008

Jean-Marie Fourrier has been at the helm of his family domaine since the mid 1990s and has steadily risen to become one of Gevrey-Chambertin's most important vignerons. Having served an apprentice under the famous Henri Jayer before a brief stint at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon, Jean-Marie returned to France with a clear vision to raise to improve the quality of his wines to be the equal of any in the Côte de Nuits.

Grapes are destemmed after picking and fermentation is kept on the cooler side. A 36 - 48 hour maceration precedes the fermentation, punching down is manual and malolactic fermentation is restricted through temperature control. These are superbly elegant wines which push their ethereal fruit character to the fore.
