Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St Jacques Sylvie Esmonin 2013 is a powerful expression of this Premier Cru, defined by the producer’s focus on gentle extraction and traditional winemaking. The 2013 Burgundy vintage was cool and structured, providing a foundation of high acidity and firm, dense tannins that required careful management during the 14-16 month élevage in French oak. The resulting palate is medium-to-full-bodied and taut, built around a deep concentration that demands substantial cellaring to resolve its inherent tension, successfully capturing the firm, classic character of the year.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques has a slightly reduced, quite savory bouquet with menthol notes filtering through the dark berry fruit, some new oak still present. The palate is medium-bodied with thickset, succulent tannin, moderate acidity, a little chewy in the mouth but with pleasing purity towards the finish. This is a full-on Clos Saint Jacques that will need several years in bottle. It`s a bit muscular, but that is Sylvie`s style, so be prepared to afford this a decade in bottle to get the best from it. The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru needs a bit of encouragement on the nose that is quite sullen and later almost reluctantly springs scents of blackcurrant, allspice and light iris flower. The palate is well-balanced with slightly chewy tannins. There is a taut line of acidity, and the palate is structured with perhaps some sinew on the finish. Not so much in the way of finesse here, though plenty of matière. Neal Martin1st October 2023
