Based in Beaune, Louis Jadot is one Burgundy`s largest producers, making over 220 different wines. The Maison was originally founded in 1859 by Louis Henri Denis Jadot, 30 years after the family had bought its very first vineyard, Clos des Ursules. This particular release comes from the Premier Cru Clos Saint-Jacques, where the Maison owns a tiny 1-hectare plot. The 2001 vintage reveals a beautifully complex nose, with plenty of spices, sage, cherries and liquorice. The palate is brimming with energy, featuring blackberries, cassis, savoury herbs, and some gentle tannins.

The 2001 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru tasted at Jadot is similar to the magnum tasted four to five years ago. The nose is a little muffled at first yet gains clarity to reveal leathery black fruit, clove and cedar as before. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins that loosen with aeration, a little more rustic than the magnum tasted before, with a little attenuation on the finish. Fine, but not the best Clos Sain-Jacques produced by Jadot. Tasted at Louis Jadot in Beaune.Neal Martin1st March 2023
