Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St Jacques Domaine Fourrier 2005 is a Premier Cru red wine from the Côte de Nuits. This magnum is produced from Pinot Noir vines older than 50 years, with Jean-Marie Fourrier employing a style that includes leaving the wine on its lees for 18 months. The 2005 vintage provided ideal ripening conditions, yielding high-toned aromas of rose, truffle and musk. A creamy texture defines the palate, with pungent spices and minerals providing a complex final layer.

2005 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru from Domaine Fourrier is fabulous. It's slightly Bretty on the nose, yet the aromatics have real chutzpah. But it is the palate that impresses so much: very pure and charming, no sign of Brett here, with scintillating mineralité and a piquant, livewire finish. One notices how the nose “catches up” with the quality of the palate. This is drinking beautifully. Tasted at the 05/15 Burgundy dinner in The Good Earth. Neal Martin17th June 2025

Fourrier’s 2005 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St.-Jacques reveals a gorgeous aroma of black fruits, rose, truffle, tea and musk, a marrowy, creamy richness of texture, and a riveting finishing complexity of fruit, meat, flowers, pungent spices and minerals. If this is not a case of progression into the territory of grand cru quality, I don’t know what is. I would plan to start following this from ten years out and anticipate at least a second decade of improvement. (With a vintage-typical, yet in this instance, somehow not disruptive contrast of milky texture with tart fresh fruit, and displaying strikingly overt minerality, the 2004 rendition of this wine is also well worth a decade of cellaring.)

Jean-Marie Fourrier has been at the helm of his family domaine since the mid 1990s and has steadily risen to become one of Gevrey-Chambertin's most important vignerons. Having served an apprentice under the famous Henri Jayer before a brief stint at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon, Jean-Marie returned to France with a clear vision to raise to improve the quality of his wines to be the equal of any in the Côte de Nuits.

Grapes are destemmed after picking and fermentation is kept on the cooler side. A 36 - 48 hour maceration precedes the fermentation, punching down is manual and malolactic fermentation is restricted through temperature control. These are superbly elegant wines which push their ethereal fruit character to the fore.
