Domaine Fourrier Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques 2011 is a mature 1er Cru Burgundy Pinot Noir from the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation of the Côte de Nuits. Clos Saint-Jacques is arguably the most prestigious 1er Cru in Gevrey-Chambertin and in good vintages produces Pinot Noirs of Grand Cru level. "This also displays a deft touch of wood that surrounds the ultra-fresh and ultra-elegant, pure and superbly well-layered aromas that offer a broad array of both red and blue fruit, stone, exotic tea and dried floral hints. There is a striking vibrancy and intensity to the firmly mineral-driven medium weight flavours that possess simply gorgeous depth on the perfectly balanced and linear finish that delivers outstanding length. Textbook Clos St Jacques." Burghound, 2014

The 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St.-Jacques 1er Cru comes from one of my own bottles. As previous bottles have shown, it is initially markedly reduced on the nose, a little stemmy at first and then reveals enticing gamey aromas. The palate is superior to the aromatics. This is very well balanced and harmonious with fine tannin, still imbued with a sense of symmetry I have remarked upon since barrel. Promising, however, I would like to see some melioration on the nose. Tasted privately at home.Neal Martin1st May 2019

Jean-Marie Fourrier has been at the helm of his family domaine since the mid 1990s and has steadily risen to become one of Gevrey-Chambertin's most important vignerons. Having served an apprentice under the famous Henri Jayer before a brief stint at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon, Jean-Marie returned to France with a clear vision to raise to improve the quality of his wines to be the equal of any in the Côte de Nuits.

Grapes are destemmed after picking and fermentation is kept on the cooler side. A 36 - 48 hour maceration precedes the fermentation, punching down is manual and malolactic fermentation is restricted through temperature control. These are superbly elegant wines which push their ethereal fruit character to the fore.
