The Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St Jacques Armand Rousseau 2005 is a significant expression from a renowned domaine. This wine showcases a blend of fresh black cherry fruit, alongside notes of earthy minerality, floral hints and subtle spices such as star anise. The Clos St Jacques site, with Rousseau owning approximately one third, is celebrated for its depth and complexity.

The 2005 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru delivers everything you really want from this Grand Cru in all but name. The nose has undoubtedly opened up a little since I tasted a ferociously backward bottle in Hong Kong, yet there is some way to go. Tightly-coiled red fruit, dark cherry, pressed rose petal and clove. The palate is the old iron fist in a velvet glove. It is beautifully defined by its filigree tannins, effortless and harmonious, with a gentle crescendo towards a finish that seems to envelop the senses. You will be smitten by its charms. Tasted at the Southwold Burgundy dinner at Hatched restaurant. Neal Martin1st March 2023
