One of Gevrey-Chambertin`s most prestigious premier cru sites, Clos Saint-Jacques is situated on southeast-facing slopes with limestone-rich soils. Many argue that Clos Saint-Jacques is of grand cru quality, along with its northern neighbour Les Cazetiers. This cuvée is produced by Armand Rousseau, a family-owned domaine currently led by Eric Rousseau and his daughter Cyrielle. Expect deep fruit coupled with earth and dry leaves plus some sweet spice notes of cinnamon and nutmeg.

The 1998 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is relatively youthful on the nose: dark berry fruit, cola and earthy scents. I don't find the oak as well integrated here compared to other vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, well-balanced, backward and sinewy. It gallops along nicely without every demanding reams of superlatives. Tasted blind at the Wallace brothers' Xmas dinner.Neal Martin1st March 2023
