Based in the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin, Joseph Roty is a family-owned Domaine producing a wide range of wines, from entry-level Bourgogne to highly sought-after Grand Crus. Joseph sadly passed away in 2008 and the estate is currently managed by his son Pierre-Jean. This release comes from Clos Prieur, a Premier Cru planted exclusively to Pinot Noir. Widely regarded as an excellent vintage, 1996 red Burgundies are drinking very well now.

Very good deep red-ruby. Reticent aromas of licorice and pepper. Sweet and fat in the mouth; comes across as softer than the Champchenys, with more successfully buffered acids and tannins. But still rather tightly wrapped and holding much in reserve. Showing well today.Stephen Tanzer1st March 1999
