Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin Au Velle 1998 is a medium-bodied Burgundy red wine from the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation of the Côte de Nuits. The late Denis Mortet established his eponymous domaine in Gevrey-Chambertin in the 1990s. Until his premature death in 2006, he was a hugely respected winemaker in Burgundy, renowned for his meticulous attention to detail. Today, the estate is run by his son Arnaud Mortet, who made a slight change in the style of the wines, which are now less concentrated and more elegant. The Gevrey-Chambertin Au Velle cuvée is produced from parcels with an ideal location in the commune and reveals rich aromas of cherry and pepper.

Vinous
Bright full ruby. Superripe yet utterly primary aromas of blackberry and licorice; less animal than Mortet's '98 Gevrey-Chambertin Combes de Dessus. Tightly wound and very intensely flavored; penetrating and powerful for village wine. Finishes long and subtle, with powerful but ripe tannins. Should develop slowly in bottle. These 'cold soils' have a tendency to yield tough wines, says winemaker Denis Mortet, which is why he harvests here as late as possible; in '98, he finished on Saturday, September 26, just as the rain began.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2000
