Ganko Olivier Riviere 2015 is a testament to Olivier Riviere`s commitment to crafting authentic Rioja. Sourced from a high-elevation site at 600 metres near Cárdenas, this wine blends ancient Garnacha and Mazuelo vines, aged 60 to 90 years, cultivated in sandy and ferruginous red clay soils. The 2015 vintage exhibits a structured palate, highlighting the characteristics of its terroir. Riviere, known as `Ganko` by his Japanese importer, embraces a meticulous, non-interventionist approach. This wine is a representation of his philosophy and skill in reinterpreting Rioja`s traditional practices.

The nose of the 2015 Ganko is always spectacular. The soils are very shallow red, rich in iron and are layered with sandstone and gypsum; Olivier Rivière considers these to be the best soils he has. There are notes of beef blood and iron, with seriousness and austerity, and at the same time, a wild side to it. The palate follows a similar path of seriousness and minerality, with a stony, dry sensation in the palate, a texture, not a flavor, and a dry, tasty and long finish. This is simply phenomenal. It`s a blend of 50% Mazuelo and 50% Garnacha. Starting with 2016, this wine will be aged exclusively in foudres. 4,000 bottles were filled in May 2017. - Luis Gutiérrez
