Gaia & Rey Chardonnay Gaja 2022 is a medium-bodied white wine crafted from Chardonnay grapes in the Langhe region of Piedmont, Italy. First produced in 1983, this wine showcases the potential of the area for high-quality Chardonnay. The vintage undergoes maturation in French oak barrels for six to eight months, imparting subtle oak characteristics. Tasting notes may include apple, citrus and hints of tropical fruit, complemented by minerality. Gaja, founded by Angelo Gaja, is renowned for its pioneering efforts in modern Italian winemaking.

Currently on the market, the Gaja 2022 Langhe Gaia & Rey is a very expressive interpretation of Chardonnay, with extra aromatic intensity in this hot and dry vintage. The bouquet opens to Sicilian orange blossom, sweet almond and peach. There is a pretty mineral note and some spice too, but the citrusy note is what stands out most at the moment. The wine is 100% oak aged, but there has been a recent move to larger oak vessels used in combination with barrique. This pretty white finishes with an elegantly creamy texture.

The 2022 Gaia & Rey is another terrific white from Gaja in this challenging but surprising vintage. Lemon confit, white flowers, mint and a kiss of French oak all grace this creamy, beautifully textured Chardonnay. Impressive.

From Turin to Tuscany

The Gaja Winery was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja and has been owned and operated by five generations of the Gaja family. One of Italy’s most renowned and dynamic wineries, Gaja first established its world-class reputation with the powerful reds it produced in the region of Piemonte in Northwestern Italy.

A key figure was Angelo Gaja, who took over the running of the estate in 1970 and sought to showcase the best that the Nebbiolo grape could produce with stellar Barolo and Barbaresco wines. The estate produces unique white wines too, such as the marvellous single varietal Sauvignon Blanc, Alteni di Brassica.

Gaja is also a leading name in Tuscany, having diversified into the production of Brunello and Super Tuscan wines. The Gaja family have owned the Pieve Santa Restituta estate since 1994 from which they produce two single-vineyard Brunello di Montalcino wines, Rennina and Sugarille. In 1996, Angelo Gaja purchased the Ca’Marcanda estate in Bolgheri.
