Franz Hirtzberger Singerriedel Riesling Smaragd 2001 is a single-site white wine from the Wachau. Singerriedel is renowned for its paragneiss soils and steep exposition, producing Rieslings of immense power and aromatic height. The 2001 vintage provided a long, cool ripening period that resulted in a wine of incredible structural focus and clarity. Now fully mature, the profile exhibits notes of dried peach, lime marmalade and a smoky minerality. The palate is full-bodied and viscous, typical of the Smaragd classification, yet it remains balanced by a persistent saline drive.

Hirtzberger's expanded acreage is now in production, hopefully meaning that the number of bottles will keep pace with the increased number of American riesling enthusiasts. This was, as often, among the last-harvested wines of the vintage. Site-typical apricot aromas mingle with those of pepper, lilac, herbs and quarry dust. The palate exhibits a truly uncanny combination of textural creaminess with juicy brightness and striking clarity of pit fruit, citrus, herb and mineral flavors. Subtle and extraordinarily persistent. 2 stars.David Schildknecht1st January 2003
