Since establishing his Priorat-based winery in 1989 after a stint working at Château Pétrus, Álvaro Palacios has quickly come to be recognised as one of Spain’s greatest winemakers. With a focus on local varieties from exceptionally old, low-yielding vines, Palacios is consistently crafting some of the country’s finest wines. `Finca Dofi` is mostly Grenache with a small amount of Cariñena from a plot in the village of Gratallops, planted between 1900 and 1940 on a precipitous hillside with typical ‘llicorella’ slate soils. The 2016 is a sublime release that is powerful and long, yet remarkably pure and elegant. Laden with wild red and black fruits, wild herbs and a distinctive mineral streak, this is already superb to drink but will happily age for another 3-5 years. Sold in hedonistic 300cl format.

Deep, lurid ruby. A highly perfumed and impressively complex bouquet displays an array of ripe red/blue fruits, exotic spices, licorice candy, vanilla, cola and smoky minerals, with a suave floral topnote that gains strength with air. Stains the palate with sweet black raspberry, cherry-cola, star anise, mocha and floral pastille flavors that are braced and lifted by a spine of juicy acidity. Shows outstanding clarity and mineral cut on the long, floral-dominated finish, which is given shape and final grip by fine-grained, even tannins. This wine's blend of richness and vivacity is really impressive.Josh Raynolds1st April 2019
