Especial Ribera del Cuarzo Malbec 2022 is a single-vineyard red wine from the cool-climate region of Río Negro in Patagonia, Argentina. It offers a complex expression of the Malbec grape, characterised by dense black fruit, subtle spice and earthy undertones. The interplay of ripe plum and blackberry is complemented by notes of tobacco and graphite, bringing depth and intrigue. Originating from the Araucana Vineyard, this wine benefits from the region`s calcareous soils and cool climate, which contribute to its structured acidity. Best enjoyed now or over the next 7-10 years.

A Malbec mixed with 10% Merlot from Mainque, Río Negro, aged in 20% new barrels. Bright violet in the glass. The nose offers notes of sour cherry, plum, herbs and a novel, bloody profile. An elemental wine displaying complementary oaky hints. Rich in the mouth, it has active, gentle tannins to which the Merlot adds a little spice and texture. Juicy and medium-bodied, with acid that leaves a tingle at the back of the throat, and a long, fruity aftertaste. A classical wine. - Joaquin Hidalgo

Full bottle a heavy 1,477 g. From the Valle Azul in Río Negro, Patagonia. Sandy loam soil of alluvial, aeolian, and volcanic origin. High content of calcium carbonate. 95% Malbec, 5% Petit Verdot. 12 months in French oak, of which 30% new. TA 5.93 g/l, RS 5.05 gl.Deep crimson with purplish rim. Concentrated black fruit, blackberry and cassis. A touch charry/toasty from the oak but not overwhelmed by it. Dense, pure but surprisingly fresh. Lots of dark chocolate on the palate and smooth, chocolate-like texture. Not quite as fresh as the Clásico but richer and more obviously oaky on the palate. Generous and long with just enough freshness to balance. The alcohol shows a little on the finish. I`d wait a little longer before broaching this. (JH)
